Signs Your uPVC Door Lock Needs Repair
uPVC door problems usually start from a faulty door alignment or gearbox. Our engineer will look into both before recommending to have your uPVC lock changed. Give us a call on 01942 909027 and explain the issue that you are having with your door – in many cases we’ll be able to ascertain the problem from your description and have the right replacement parts to hand when we arrive.
The symptoms listed below are indicative of a uPVC door lock or alignment problem. As each problem can have a different cause we would recommend that you try and establish which symptoms you are experiencing:
- Door won’t close/is scraping – likely the keeps or the hinges
- Handle feels stiff – could be down to alignment or the multipoint mechanism
- Key turns but the door won’t open – there may be a jammed mechanism
- Key spins – possibly a worn cylinder or failed gearbox
- Handle lifts but won’t lock – possibly a worn gearbox or a dropped door
We will need to inspect the lock to establish the problem before commencing any work, but we will talk you through any issues we find.
Gearbox and Mechanism Repair
uPVC doors are secured with a number of locking points along the length of the door. Lifting the handle moves a gearbox inside the uPVC door frame which in turn moves the locking points. The gearbox can wear over time meaning that although the handle still goes up and down as normal, the door isn’t being locked properly. In some cases it’s possible to repair the locking mechanism but more often than not we’ll need to fit a new gearbox. We can quote for this on inspection as prices vary according to parts and the model of door.
Our uPVC door engineer was recently called out to a property close to Martland Mill Lane in Pemberton (relatively new build). The customer reported that although the handle went up and down as normal and the key turned in the cylinder freely, the door wasn’t locking. On inspection, our engineer found that the gearbox had worn meaning that the locking points weren’t operating smoothly. A new gearbox was fitted, all the locking points were checked, and the engineer tested the door from either side before leaving. The whole job took less than an hour.
Door Alignment and Adjustment
Another common reason for uPVC door problems is that the door has dropped. This can mimic the symptoms of a faulty uPVC lock but needs different treatment. Rather than changing a lock, the problem can often be solved with an inexpensive adjustment of the keeps and/or door hinges. All uPVC doors drop a little over time, even in newer housing estates such as those in Worsley Mesnes and Platt Bridge. Give us a call and one of our Locksmith Wigan engineers can adjust your uPVC door.
Emergency uPVC Door Opening
If your uPVC door has locked you out or jammed shut, our locksmith in Wigan can help. Our engineer can get to most properties within 25 to 45 minutes, day or night. Our emergency house lockout service starts from £90. We’ll always attempt non-destructive entry if at all possible. Don’t try to gain entry by forcing your door or breaking a window, as in all likelihood you’ll end up doing more damage and costing yourself more than just changing the lock!
Patio, French and Conservatory Doors and Window Locks
Our engineer specialises in all aspects of door and window locksmithing including uPVC doors and windows, patio doors, French doors and conservatory doors. Problems with uPVC window locks or a window handle not turning? We can sort that too, often at the same time as a uPVC door visit.
Anti Snap Upgrades
If you have an older euro cylinder lock, it may not offer adequate protection against thieves. Ultion locks offer an anti-snap uPVC lock upgrade with a TS007 3-star rating.
